Everyone around her pities her, finds her infantile, and yet she has the clearest moral compass. Not only that, but it paints Cora as a sane figure surrounded by depravity, misogyny, and sexual violence. There is so much implied by the story and those implications are horrifying. Exodus is thirty thousand times worse, for the precise reason that it isn’t nearly so explicit. It’s pretty disgusting, yes.īut it’s certainly not the most disturbing story I’ve read from the novel. There are records of people vomiting and fainting during readings of the passage and I don’t blame them. He seems to rely more and more on shock value these days in my opinion.)Īnyway, probably the most discussed short story contained within Haunted is Guts. It’s normally considered the most vile. I haven’t read a ton of his new stuff (I tend to find it less than profound. It’s one of few “classic” Palahniuk novels I’ve never read. I’m reading Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk right now. ![]()
